
Please have readings done for the next class. You'll want to have paper and a favorite writing tool (or a laptop) so you can do in-class writing assignments that we will share with each other.
Week 1: Discussion of principles and practices. Outline of class. Planning to garden. Short writing exercise on Genius Loci.
Readings for Next Time: Brickner, Chs. 1 & 2. Burdock, "Mindful Planting."
Writing for Next Time: Take notes and be prepared to share one claim from the reading that surprises you.
Week 2: The Wheel of the Year: Starting seedlings, discussion of growing from seed and seed-time of year.
Readings for Next Time: Brickner, Chs. 3 & 4. Burdock, "Rotten Pleasures."
Writing for Next Time: Take notes as for week 1 + and go out to a non-chain garden shop. Review it in class. If you buy a tool or seeds, bring them to class for a blessing.
Week 3: Sustainability and the Big (REALLY big) Picture.
Readings for Next Time: Brickner, Chs. 5 & 6. Burdock, "Not So Gentle Reminders."
Writing for Next Time: Take notes as for earlier weeks + describe a garden project you plan to undertake that will not break your budget or back yet respect the space you use and the ecosystem of our region.
Week 4: The Dignity of Labor & The Only Magic in Which I Believe
Readings for Next Time: Brickner, Chs. 7 & 8. Burdock, "Pathwork."
Writing for Next Time: Take notes as for earlier weeks + write about a meal you like to prepare, carefully noting how you might change things in the year ahead to use more locally sourced ingredients or otherwise add sustainability to the menu.
Week 5: Bringing in the harvest. Discussion of canning and other means of preserving food.
Readings for Next Time: Brickner, Chs. 9 & 10. Burdock, "Off the Linoleum, Into the Wild."
Writing for Next Time: Take notes as for earlier weeks + repeat the Genius Loci exercise from week 1 in your actual yard, garden, or patio.
Week 6: Going Hence & A Garden Celebration. Bring an after-dinner snack to share as we discuss our final readings.
